We cannot tell you how much we love our home.    You were both so instrumental in making our dream a reality and we cannot thank you enough. From the early stages of Claude having to reassure me about the soils and help us pick the perfect lot to the showing of our home as the 2002 Celebration Home we were confident that you had everything under control and always had our interests at the forefront.  

The countless times that you slowed things down at the planning meetings to assure that Gail was getting exactly what she wanted proved to us that you were interested in building what we saw as our dream home, not what some architect wanted and not what you thought we should have.

Following the completion of our home we have been amazed by the ongoing service that you have provided. This was never more evident than in August of 2009 when our home was struck by lightning and we had a fire that caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damages. Having you two on site the next morning and having our building superintendant, Leo, immediately available really helped get us through a very stressful time with minimal difficulty. We were not even displaced from our home for a single night. I still am amazed that all the work was completed in a month's time.

The awards you won for building our home were well deserved, but most importantly you should know that you built another dream home and made new friends on the way.   My difficult schedule certainly made us less than perfect clients, but you always gracefully accommodated us and, from the clients’ perspective, made the process seem effortless.

While I do not anticipate building again, if I planned on downsizing as my family moves on and I head into retirement, I would not even consider another builder.

Mutually Beneficial, Non-Exclusive Corporate Supporters

The El Paso County Medical Society (EPCMS) provides members with reliable, timely, relevant information and resources that will enable them to preserve or restore the vitality of their medical practice. We are always open to learning of programs designed to identify unique methods that have potential to provide education, communication, resources and tools to members.

EPCMS corporate supporters must provide a product or service that is in some way unique to EPCMS members and that is not now, or will ever, be offered to doctors in our area except through membership in the EPCMS. Though not required we welcome the opportunity to offset dues increases with appropriate non-dues income should that be a part of the package presented.

We receive frequent requests from those who feel they have a product or service that will meet the needs of EPCMS members. Due to the volume of such requests we invite interested organizations to submit an initial Request for Proposals (RFP) which must be reviewed and recommended by our Friends of EPCMS Advisory Committee for final approval to the EPCMS Board of Directors.

 

Committees

 The El Paso County Medical Society was organized in 1879 and chartered in 1902 as the professional organization of physicians of El Paso County.  The purpose of the society today remains basically the same as first written:  "...to promote and develop the science and art of medicine, the betterment of the public health ..." and “to create a liaison between the doctor and patient.”

Committee for Persons with Developmental Disabilities

Provide an on-going sounding board for developmentally disabled persons and their families in the matter of case management.  The committee is composed of persons who are familiar with the needs of developmentally disabled persons and the challenges faced by physicians in working with these individuals.  The committee meets 12:15 p.m., second Tuesday, every other month.

Delegates & Alternates

Members are elected to represent EPCMS at Colorado Medical Society House of Delegates meetings.  The Annual meeting is generally held in September each year.  Delegates and alternates meet for a local pre-caucus meeting before the House meeting.  When members feel the society should submit a resolution to the House of Delegates, they are encouraged to contact any Delegate.

Emergency Care Committee

Medical directors of all local, civilian and military hospitals, medical advisors of all pre-hospital care services and other appropriate physicians associated with the delivery of emergency care advise the membership on all matters pertaining to emergency medical services and bring the society point-of view to others involved.  The committee meets 12:00 p.m., third Tuesday, every other month.

Directors of nursing of all local and military hospitals, representatives of the Colorado Nurses Association, El Paso County School Nurses Association, long term care and home health care agencies, and physicians work together for community benefit and to enhance the professional image of nursing.  Each year nurses are selected by their peers to receive the Excellence in Nursing Awards presented by the medical society. The committee meets at 12:15 p.m., second Wednesday of every other month.

School nurses from each school district in El Paso and Teller Counties meet with physicians to provide a forum for interaction and communication among groups interested in school health.  Meetings are 7:00 a.m., fourth Wednesday of each month.

Practice Viability

Those two words may strike fear into your heart, give you a warm fuzzy feeling like a cozy blanket, or may just be two mysterious words that mean very little. As the “leader” of your medical society, I feel I would be remiss if I did not address this issue for our members.

So, what in the world is practice viability? It definitely means different things to different people, but, in general, means what is the future likelihood that your practice or employer will continue to operate in such a financial manner so as to provide you with a vehicle to practice medicine, a livelihood, and an outlet for personal and professional growth and education.

OK, so that’s a mouthful. What does it really mean? I think the meaning of viability really depends on your interest in and knowledge of the business aspects of your practice. For some, viability means more money in the bank than expenses at the end of the month. For others, it means a long-term, strategic financial plan for growth and capital expenditure, allowing for legislative, payer and technological changes for the next twenty years. But, a basic knowledge of the financial algebra of your practice will allow you to be a successful practicing physician for as long as you desire.

Where do we start? First, you went to medical school, residency, fellowship, etc., for many years to learn how to be a great doctor. Not much, or perhaps zero, time was spent on your business education. That’s OK. One of the reasons I became a doctor was to ‘avoid’ that ‘business stuff’. Well, 15 years later, I am knee-deep in it, and had to do a lot of self-education. However, for those of you who do not wish to or do not have the time to learn all the ‘business stuff’, then you have to find, hire and trust people smarter than you to help you with the business aspects of your practice.

Another aspect of this which is hard for most doctors is that we are smart. We have always been at the tops of our classes, first, magna cum laude…, but we never went to business school, so we don’t have the education to be smart about business. It is hard to admit to ourselves that:

A. We don’t know something.
B. We might need help or have to find someone smarter than us about something in which we are not experts.

That’s OK. It’s a 12 step program, and the first step is realizing you have a problem. Repeat after me: “I don’t know everything about everything, including how to manage my practice.” There, see, that didn’t hurt a bit, did it?

If you can really acknowledge your own strengths and weaknesses, you are now more than 50% of the way on to a healthier, happier practice and a strong, consistent bottom line.
